Quality Engineering Co-op at Zimmer Biomet

Overview:
I completed my Quality Engineering Co-op Spring and Summer of 2019 with Zimmer Biomet (ZB). I worked with the Quality Assurance Team supporting operations and manufacturing at the Warsaw, IN location. Specifically, I worked with the Micro-fix, Sports Medicine, Trauma, Hips, and Extremities teams. If you would like to see what I did while at ZB, look through the pages under my Co-op tab.

Building Technical Communication Skills Throughout my Co-op:
One of the less obvious to me, but still very important skills I was able to build on were my technical communications skills. Working closely with full time Engineers provided me connections and real-world opportunities. I was able to contribute to meetings and project proposals for important details within the company. Overall, this Co-op not only allowed me to grow my skills as a Biomedical Engineer, but also my skills in communicating and presenting within a professional setting.
Writing a New Procedure:
I helped a Quality Engineer write a brand new procedure on sampling plans, which led me to help train supervisors on the new document. This new, campus-wide procedure was a revision for continuous improvement for the company. The previous revision to the Sampling Plan Procedure was quite old, with sections not relevant to the current methods. I was able to use my fresh eyes, problem solving skills, and organizational skills to condense the procedure which made it efficient and easy to follow.

Writing Technical Memos:
I also wrote 14 technical memos, one for each visual aid I had created. The memos were complied of 6 months past data, analyzed to show NCR trending, as well as reasoning and root causes for these NCRs. Engineers often have to justify their work, and the memos demonstrate my technical writing skills.
Final Presentation:
As a final project for my co-op, I gave a 10 minute presentation to my colleagues about the projects I had worked on during my time there and the results that came with them. This allowed me to gain experience on presenting in front of upper management professionals, as well as my colleagues that I interacted with on a daily basis.
